Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail

If you’ve heard or read about the notorious Sultan Moulay Ismail, then you must make it a point to visit the warrior king’s final resting place.

By now, your research about Morocco would have taken you to stories of Sultan Moulay Ismail who was known for his ruthless nature as well as his vision for grand projects that still stand strong to this day (if you haven’t, do find out more about him). This great Moroccan ruler – in fact, one of the greatest in the country – rests in peace here in Meknes, a city that he founded and made the administrative capital. However, his mausoleum closed in 2016 for restoration after tremendous pressure from UNESCO and is set to reopen sometime in 2018. Did we tell you that this sultan had four wives, 500 concubines and could have possibly fathered over 1,000 children (only Genghis Khan has so far beaten him at his league with around 2,000 children)? Or that he had 12,000 horses? Now that you’ve read this, you’re definitely going there, aren’t you?

Tips Before You Go
Information on whether or not the mausoleum has reopened is still very obscure, so it’s best to ask the locals once you arrive in Meknes. From here, you can also walk to the nearby Royal Stables that used to house the sultan’s 12,000 horses.
