Maui Ocean Center

Self-described as the “Aquarium of Hawaii.”

Hawaiians have a long history of seafaring and a deep reverence for the ocean since the first Polynesians settled on the island chain. With so many rare and endangered creatures in the sea, the Maui Ocean Center is particularly important in research, but also in helping people get up close with these majestic marine animals. They stay in touch with the indigenous culture of Hawaii, working closely with a kahuna who blesses the new Hawaiian green sea turtles and sharks at the Ocean Center.

Since its opening in 1998, the Center has grown to house the largest live collection of Pacific corals, exhibits for marine mammals and sea turtles, and a 750,000-gallon Open Ocean exhibit with a viewing tunnel below it. With six different shark species, stingrays and hundreds of fishes, the tunnel offers a magical experience of being surrounded by the ocean around Hawaii. For scuba-certified visitors, there is also an opportunity to dive with the sharks in the exhibit.

For families with children, the Ocean Center provides an invaluable opportunity for both fun and education. But, for adults, it’s no shame to let your inner child loose in awe of the ocean either!
