Matterhorn Museum

The story of Zermatt and the majestic Matterhorn.

Visitors immerse themselves in a realistic experience of “Zermatlantis”, the mountain world of past generations, at the Matterhorn Museum. The museum comprises an authentically reconstructed mountain village, which brings the history of Zermatt and the Matterhorn to life. With subterranean rooms and vividly recreated mountain huts, visitors gain fascinating insight into the tumultuous history of the majestic beast of a mountain, from its African origins to the historic first ascent of the seemingly insurmountable Matterhorn, all the way till the present day.

The collection of memorabilia at the museum, including the broken rope from the tragic first ascent with Edward Whymper’s team in 1865 and “Theo”, the 16th-century mercenary who failed to cross the dangerous Theodul Pass, both move and inspire with the courage and resilience of the alpinists and mountaineers who have dared to challenge the impossible. More than just another museum for history buffs and museum enthusiasts, the Matterhorn museum is a one-of-a-kind showcase of the strength and bravery demonstrated by inspirational humans from around the world, a story of the triumph and tragedy surrounding the giant natural wonder that is the Matterhorn.
