Matterhorn

The enchanting crowning jewel of the Swiss Alps.

Majestic and mysterious, the Matterhorn is the most famous mountain in Europe and the icon of the Swiss Alps. The mountain is slightly curved at the top, rising out of the ground to a height of 4,478 metres above sea level and looming over all the surrounding mountains like a huge, jagged, snow-capped tooth.

The snow never melts at the Matterhorn glacier paradise, which stands at 3,883 metres above sea level, allowing ski enthusiasts to glide down the spectacular slopes all throughout the year. Apart from skiing, you can go for hikes along one of the many well-marked trails. Everyone from window shoppers to hardcore hikers will find a trail suitable for them. One of the most stunning sights you’ll see on a hike is the reflection of the Matterhorn on the Riffelsee lake, which is just a 10-minute walk from the Rotenboden train station and so easy that even young children can do it.

For an enchanting view of the Matterhorn, take the train up to the top of the neighbouring Gornergrat, where you’ll get an unparalleled view of the mountain in all its glory. Once you’re up there, you’ll never want to leave!
