The Matsumoto City Museum of Art, a popular landmark in the city of Matsumoto, is a definite treat for art enthusiasts. It features the works of artists who come from Matsumoto City or have been inspired by its surroundings. Amongst them is Yayoi Kusama (born 1929), who is one of the world’s most influential artists. Her iconic artwork is displayed on the exterior of the building, which boasts an award-winning architectural design comprised of glass and wood.


At the entrance, visitors enjoy a view of the outdoor lawn and Kusama’s Flowers of Illusion installation. Inside, the exhibits showcase many of Kusama’s famous works, including her trademark cheerful, polka-dotted art. In addition to Kusama’s impressive works, the museum also houses the works of calligrapher Shinzan Kamijyo (1907-1997) and Kazuo Tamura (1904-1997). Temporary exhibitions are also occasionally held here.

Tips Before You Go
The museum’s opening hours are 9am to 5pm, closed on Mondays. It is a 12 minute walk or 5 minute bus ride from JR Matsumoto train station. Most of the information is presented in Japanese, with some translations available.
