Matala Beach

An intimate bay rich with ancient history, but perfect for any beach activity, modern or adventurous.

Famous in the 60s with hippies such as the likes of Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, Matala Beach is a delightful beach bay with much to do. The ridged sandstone cliff enclosing the beach is riddled with limestone caves carved out during the Neolithic period, making for a fun exploratory afternoon by the beach. Rumoured to be ancient Roman tombs, these caves can be accessed by climbing, swimming, or snorkelling. At the top of the cliff, you can also experience the thrill of cliff diving!

For those who prefer a more modern beach experience, there is an array of waterfront shops, bars, and restaurants to choose from. Rest assured, the expansive campground nearby provides you with the option for an extended beach trip. The trees dotting the campsite make for an intimate camping experience on the beach under the stars. Despite being a popular destination, the beach has retained much of the quiet charm from its humble beginnings as a sleepy fishing village. It is a must to visit Matala Beach for a slice of the peaceful energy the 60s hippies were so drawn to.
