Maritiman

Maritaman defies all the pesky “do not touch” signs at every museum you’ve visited before, welcoming you to be hands-on in exploring their assembly of maritime relics.

This Maritime museum was awarded the Certificate of Excellence 2015 by trip advisor, which is no surprise considering how it offers the chance to experience life at sea without even having to leave the quayside. It might seem strange to step onto a ship but not be journeying anywhere, but with these incredibly authentic armada of 15 museum vessels such as barges, submarines and cargo ships, you wouldn’t even know the difference. Venture down below to the underwater submarine, HMS Nordkaparen, and get an idea of just how unique a feeling being submerged in the depths of the ocean is, and even have the rare opportunity to look through an ingeniously-designed periscope which allows you to see the world above. Investigate the formidable destroyer, Jagaren Småland, the current title holder for largest warship in Scandinavia.

Learn through 11 experiment stations at the Ocean Lab, a stimulating exhibit for those of all ages that will leave you with a head stuffed full of new and interesting fun facts which you can share with your friends. Visit the quirky goggle-wearing guide, Virvelina, whose energetic and engaging knot-tying lessons, treasure hunts and tales of maritime historical adventures will enthrall all the kids. There’s also an on site Cafe Matrosen, which serves yummy traditional Swedish style waffles and much more, so what are you waiting for? Climb on board!

Tips Before You Go
Lower entrance fees are charged on certain fridays, details of which can be found on their website. Unfortunately, most of the explanations are in Swedish only, but both English and Swedish tours are available at particular times. Alternatively, download the museums handy mobile app with audio commentary to guide yourself through the collection. Also, take note that the submarine is a relatively small space, so you might want to reserve this section for when the museum is less crowded or for when you’re not carrying bulky bags.
