Marina Grande Beach

By the Marina Grande lies Capri’s biggest sandy secret.

Somewhere between 184m to 300m long and 40m at its widest: that’s the size of Capri’s ocean side gem. The Spiaggia Libera Marina Grande, as it’s formally known, is conveniently located right beside the port of Marina Grande. With crowds drawn in by its size and the vast Amalfi Coast, there isn’t a day where the beach’s sandy skirt isn’t filled with striped parasols and colorful beach towels that rival the fishing boats in their vibrancy. Beach resorts and hearty smiles welcome guests with their seafood, serving up fresh catch with flesh so tender it falls off the bone. Every few seconds, one can spot a boat skipping off into the distance with an entire load of island hoppers as they begin their exploration of the protected sea reserve, Punta Campanella. Admittedly, there’s so much going on at the beach at an instant that the details whizz by you if you aren’t on the lookout.

Even after the sun has set, the crowds don’t dissipate. A different crowd simply takes over as shutters are drawn up and neon signposts flicker to life. The beach bars and clubs that open for operation now run well into the night and night thrill seekers can rave to the beats playing out of the discotheques, the sounds bleeding into the night and coloring it a thousand shades. Not a moment passes by on the Marina Grande beach that isn’t filled with life and activity, proudly living up to the name of the liveliest spot in town.

Tips Before You Go
Known to few, there is a beach of dark, almost ash gray sand along the stretch of Marina Grande. Found beneath Sorrento’s Villa Communale and next to the port, is a small volcanic beach. The unique hot and interestingly hued sand is a stunner against the coast in addition to begin a joy to sink your feet into. It takes a bit of searching but it’s definitely worth the effort.
