Manjanggul Cave (만장굴)

Longest lava tube in Asia.

Snaking underground for about 13 kilometres, Manjanggul Cave is extremely well preserved and is one of the finest lava tunnels in the world. Located in Jeju island, this tunnel network is formed when molten lava above slows and solidifies, creating long caves below. Only one kilometre of this UNESCO World Heritage Site is open however, where visitors will be brought along the darkness of the cave to see various types of lava formations. This includes the lava stalagmites, some of which can be as long as 70 centimetres, and the famed lava column at the end of the path. Standing at 7.8 metres tall, this lava column is the tallest found on Earth.

Tips Before You Go
On a hot day, the cave provides a refreshing respite. As such, it is recommended that you visit this cave on any other season except summer. The summer heat means that everyone else wants to get into the cave too, and this may result in long queues in the hot sun. Make sure you bring a torchlight along (or your handphone’s flash works fine too), as the cave is completely pitch-black and you wouldn’t want to trip and fall now would you?
