Manhattan Bridge

Cross over into the modern world.

An iconic piece of New York's infrastructure, the Manhattan Bridge is considered as one of the forefathers of modern suspension bridges, with many architects in the early 20th century looking to it as a model for long suspension bridges.

Today, it is an integral part of the city's modern look and has also been featured in many movies to date, such as Peter Jackson's remake of King Kong, and The Dark Knight Rises. If you know Edward Hopper’s famous painting, “Manhattan Bridge Loop”, then you know that this very bridge was the subject of his painting. Catch the subway from Manhattan to Brooklyn and look out wistfully at the view of the East River from between the frames of the bridge, and bask in the New York vibe.

Tips Before You Go
The bridge is accessible on its Manhattan side from Canal Street, in Chinatown. The Manhattan approach is arguably the most beautiful bridge approach in the city, with a stone archway, colonnade and plaza.
