Yes, it seems that naval fleets have official bakeries! In the one built between 1842 and 1845 to serve as the British Mediterranean Fleet’s official bakery now lies a collection of over 20,000 artifacts, making it the largest museum collection in Malta.

Malta is synonymous with the sea, and its history will not be complete without a look into its naval tradition. For those who want to learn about the history of the island along with seeing its natural beauty, the Malta Maritime Museum is just one of its heritage sites, but a very important one. Its collection includes 60 Maltese boats, and everything from naval engines to paintings to weaponry. They even have a large model of a third-rate (a type of ship, not a gradation of how well-preserved it is!) 18th century British ship, and even the world’s biggest Roman anchor.

Though it seems specialised, Malta’s naval and maritime history is one that is so intertwined with its culture as a whole that there’s no better way to learn about the island and its past than visiting the Maritime Museum.

Tips Before You Go
The museum may be challenging for the elderly or sight-challenged as the lighting is low and there is very little signage and with small text, but with affordable tickets and a beautiful place beside the sea, this museum should be given a chance!
