Malmö City Library

Both modern and historical, this library is an exciting place to be.

When visiting a new city, a trip to the library may not sound like the most exciting destination or the top choice on your list. However, the Malmö city library is such a standout space that it is practically a tourist attraction.

It is well-known for its beautiful architecture both inside and out, as well as its attempts to bring knowledge and media to a multicultural Malmö. Its efforts have been so successful that it draws about one million visitors per year. The library is housed in 3 main buildings that showcase the library’s history, having been functioning since the start of the 20th century. ‘The Castle’ is a beautiful historical red-brick mansion that looks like something from the English countryside and was the original building since the library’s inception. The east building, known as the ‘Calendar of Light’, was inaugurated in 1997, with its ability to filter natural light sure to wow you. Of course, you can’t miss the peculiar-shaped ‘Cylinder’ that lies in between the 2 buildings and functions as the main entrance.

Inside, its airy spaces, high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling glass windows allow an abundance of light in, as well as a gorgeous view of the surrounding garden and city. Even if you are not a lover of books by nature, you cannot help but be drawn in by this engaging space and curl up for a read.
