Island of Oahu, United States of America
Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail

The picturesque southeastern-most point of Oahu, and the hiking trail surrounding it.

A 1.5-mile paved hiking trail that goes entirely uphill one way, it is an easy but steep hike accessible to all, including children. Though the hike does go towards the Lighthouse at the southeastern-most point of the Oahu Island (but not right up to it, as it is risky), it is also popular for the beautiful views seen from the top of the hill, stretching all the way along the Makapu’u Beach and the inside of the Koko Crater. During clear days, you could go whale-watching or even see the Molokai volcano.

Though this Trail is a popular one, it is not particularly crowded. Families with children (or even adults, because we’re all kids inside!) will be happy to know of secluded tide pools along the Trail when taking the lower, unpaved Trail, reaching the inlets. With the water 15-25 feet deep, it’s often a great spot to go diving from the side of the bank.

Tips Before You Go
Hawaii is a topless state, and it is perfectly legal to go topless and people often do at the tide pools due to their seclusion. Be free to join them, but don’t gawk or take unwanted photos. As there are no amenities or trash cans along the Trail (beyond the base of the hill), make sure to keep the area clean and carry your trash with you. Free parking is also available at the base of the Trail.
