Makaluapuna Point

A majestic landform caused when a lava flow met the winds and seas.

Makaluapuna Point is also known as Dragon’s Teeth and it isn’t hard to see why, with the jagged edges if hardened lava looking like big black teeth reaching towards the sky. During one of the last lava flows on the island of Maui, as the lava approached the sea, sea winds and fierce waves blowing across the lava made it harden against the sea, creating the strange and beautiful “teeth” shapes. Smooth and grey, this lava formation is different from the other ones you see all across Hawaii.

Largely unmarked, the Dragon’s Teeth are hidden behind the Ritz-Carlton and the Bay Golf Course. Though flanked by two beautiful beaches, the Makaluapuna Point itself is largely undeveloped due to being near Honokahua, an ancient Hawaiian burial ground. This has preserved the natural splendour of the Dragon’s Teeth and the habitat of the animals that live near it. If you’re lucky, you could peer over the teeth and see sea turtles that rest there. With the large waves still crashing against the rocks, it’s a beautiful place to stop on a hike and spend the evening, looking at the natural beauty of the sunset.

Tips Before You Go
Between Oneola Bay and D.T. Fleming Beach, the Dragon’s Teeth may be difficult to reach and require a hike through the Bay Golf Course and the rocky landscape, so make sure to wear appropriate footwear and be wary of stray golf balls. Be sure to pay your respects and not step where forbidden at Honokahua on your way to Makaluapuna Point.
