Maiori

Not even floods can dull the dazzle of this Mediterranean coastal gem.

It was the year 1954 when the river Reginna Maior running through the town Maiori burst its banks. Torrential rains and successive waves of water tore through upper Maiori and the city centre to leave only destruction in its wake, the surgering uncaring and indiscriminate in what was ravaged. Just a few decades later, one can hardly tell of the disaster that turned the town on its heels, enraptured instead by the resilient beauty it has reconstructed and wrapped itself in.

The religious Maiori reveals depictions of biblical scenes in traditional Mediterranean intricacy through marble and tile at sites such as the Church of Saint Maria. One is also privy to the Maiori that is a beachside paradise. Waters so clear that the surface is just a glass casing for the forests of coral below allure beachgoers from near and far. The protected waters lead to carved hideaways by the cliffs such as the Pandora Cave where one is whisked into the surreal. Historic Maiori may be limited but in fact more prized by tourists precisely because of how little remains standing after the floods. Carved out of the cliffs to reflect the splendor of past civilizations, Castello di San Nicola de Thora-Plano and the Norman Tower both allow visitors to stand on their shoulders to take in the sight of the open seas and breathtaking crags. And we can’t omit the connoisseur of food Maiori with its range of products spun out off its groves of lemon trees and citrus. This Maiori will leave you buzzed with the refreshing taste of limoncello liqueur on your tongue and a bottle in your hand to return to home with. Which Maiori do you think you’ll like best?
