Maihaugen

One of Norway’s largest open air museums.

Have you ever wanted to visit an open air museum? Well you’re in luck, the Maihaugen in Lillehammer, Norway, is one of the country’s biggest open air museums. With almost 200 buildings, dating back from the 13th century to present day, visitors are guaranteed a rich understanding of all sorts of facilities, including schools and shops. There are 3 major sections – the Rural Collection (villages and houses from 15th-19th century), the Historic Town (buildings from 19th – 20th century), and the Residential Area (houses from the 20th century). Each section hosts a unique aspect of life before the 21st century, bound to transport you back in time.

There is also an indoor museum, with exhibits that traces the history of Norway from the ice age till now. If you want to pick up a souvenir, or get some refreshments, the indoor building has both a museum shop and a café to nourish those aching muscles. For a fun-filled learning experience with the whole family, look no further than Maihaugen.
