Mahogany Hammock Trail

A boardwalk at the Everglades National Park in Florida.

The Mahogany Hammock Trail, though a short one of only half a mile, is one that is rich in its views and sights, as the boardwalk goes through both the signature tall grass of the Everglades as well as a canopy of beautiful mahogany trees, the “oasis” among the grass “seas”. You can even spot the oldest living mahogany tree in the United States on the Trail.

Despite the 2005 hurricane that tore through the Everglades, the forest canopy has recovered quite well and it still feels like a hammock of trees. Though poison ivy sometimes makes its way into the boardwalk and mosquitoes are plentiful in the Everglades, the Trail is relatively risk-free. With luck, you may spot wildlife as diverse as the barred owl and the brown water snake in the trees or even crossing through the boardwalk. A self-guiding walk with various signs in English and Spanish at points of interests, the Trail is an easy and informational walk suitable for everyone, including children.

Tips Before You Go
The Trail is wheelchair-accessible, as it is a wooden boardwalk that is well-maintained. However, being 21 miles from the main entrance and the Ernest Coe Visitor Center, a car is recommended for a drive along the Main Park Road.
