Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail

A coastal hiking trail and a Heritage History site on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.

A secluded hiking trail around 2 miles long along the Maha'ulepu Beach, the Heritage Trail offers beautiful views of the untouched landscape, one of the last places on Kauai that remains untouched by modern development. It has very little signage, and can be accessed from nearby the Hyatt Hotel, taking you along Shipwreck Beach/Keoneloa Bay and across beautiful landscape of sand dunes, limestone formations and rocky islets that often shelter endangered and rare animals like the Hawaiian monk seal and sea turtles.

With no development on the rocky beach, the main activity of the area includes whale watching, which the Trail provides a great vantage point for. Though the Trail can get rough underfoot sometimes, it is relatively easy and accessible for all, including children. For those who want a quiet hike along or to visit a Hawaiian beach that is largely unmarred by development, the walk along Maha'ulepu Beach is ideal.

Tips Before You Go
As the trail has no amenities or shops, it is recommended that you take your own water and refreshments, but hold on to them until you get back, as there is also nowhere to throw your rubbish. Despite being an easy hiking trail, hiking or sports shoes come highly recommended, as are sunglasses, as the Trail faces the south and experiences direct sunlight throughout the day.
