Magere Brug

Amsterdam’s Skinny Bridge.

The Magere Brug, which lies across the Amstel river, means “Skinny Bridge” in English. This curious name has variant origins so take your pick: it’s said that the well-off sisters Magere who lived on either side of the river, had the bridge built so that they could visit each other. The other is that the original bridge was so narrow that it was difficult for even two pedestrians to walk alongside one another! Eventually, the bridge was replaced with one more wide, and while it’s not as skinny anymore, it’s no less beautiful.

Even from afar, the old Dutch design on this wooden bridge is evident, and the white of the painted wood makes for a stunning sight, especially at night. That’s because as darkness falls, thousands of golden lights tracing the curves and edges of the bridge light it up, casting a soft golden glow on the bridge and emphasizing the pale color. This sets it apart from the rest of the scenery, and makes for the perfect spot for a romantic stroll. Don’t forget to take your camera to take the perfect picture from afar, one that will definitely complement your Instagram aesthetic. Don’t pass up on the Magere Brug while you’re in Amsterdam!
