Madeira Whale Museum (Museu da Baleia)

Possibly the best museum dedicated to the history of whaling in the world.

Housed in an ultra-modern complex, which cost a fortune to build, the Museu da Baleia is a museum specially devoted to the history of whaling in the seas of the archipelago of Madeira and to whales in general. Replete with highlights, get up close to real whaling boats of colossal sizes, grisly harpoons and watch an eye-opening film which documents the process of how whales were caught and then slaughtered in Caniçal. Gaze at the specimens of dolphins, seals and even a gigantic whale hanging from the ceiling and do not miss out on the intriguing displays of scimshaw (whale-bone art). Certainly a museum worth checking out – you are sure to have a whale of a time here!

Tips Before You Go
Grab an audio guide for a more interactive and immersive experience, as it brings you through the various exhibits with more in-depth elaborations. While the younger kids will enjoy visiting the Sea Life Room, the whale exhibits may be a little too disturbing.
