Macy’s State Street

A department store not just for shopperholics but also for architecture buffs.

The impressive Macy’s on State Street building in Chicago might bely the true nature of what it holds inside. Granite columns flank the grand main entrance, and the two Great Clocks are hard to miss. The building first opened in 1893, and was named a National Historic Landmark in June 1978. The architecture lover in you will be awed from the very first step inside the building which simply boasts opulence, with its exquisite craftsmanship and eye-catching architectural styles, which include glinting chandeliers and a bumbling indoor fountain. The dome, with bright rays of sunlight flickering through the glass ceiling, will keep your gaze upwards for a while.

Before you dash to the various cosmetics stores on the first floor, you will be drawn to the vaulted ceiling that shimmers and captivates viewers. This Tiffany ceiling was designed by glass artist, Louis Comfort Tiffany. Taking over 18 months to complete, the ceiling is made up of a whopping 1.5 million pieces of iridescent glass. In fact, you might find yourself at the fifth floor simply to get a stunning view even closer. Now, whether or not you’ve heard of the Walnut Room before coming here, you’ll leave an expert. The Walnut Room restaurant, featuring Circassian Walnut paneling that was installed over a century ago, is the longest continuously operating restaurant in the nation! You simply can’t miss out on the ever-popular chicken pot pie while here. After you’re content with your meal, feel free to wander and indulge in the luxury stores found here.
