Lukang Folk Arts Museum (鹿港民俗文物馆)

An extravagant museum showcasing the collections of a wealthy family.

In the quaint little town of Lukang lies a lavish baroque-style western mansion, which functions as a museum for a large collection of Chinese artefacts. Originally a mansion for the wealthy Koo family, it was donated in 1973 along with the antiques inside the house. Collections in the museum can be traced all the way back to the mid-Ching dynasty to the early years of the Republic, and include artefacts like porcelains, photographs, embroideries and musical instruments. The building itself is a marvel, incorporating both Asian and Western style architecture. Designed by Japanese architect Matsunosuke Moriyama (1869 – 1949), this perfectly symmetrical building sits with another Fujianese-style house in the complex.

Tips Before You Go
The museum is a little-known gem, and as such, you will be able to explore the various collections here at your own leisure. Just make sure to ask if photographs are allowed to be taken inside though. There are no official directives stating that photographs are not allowed to be taken inside, but there have been instances when the staff have asked people not to do so. Make sure to ask first!
