Lovatnet

Visit Lake Lovatnet to not just experience the scenery, but also to learn about its tragic past.

Lovatnet is a scenic turquoise-coloured lake located some 17 kilometres from the municipality of Stryn in Sogn Og Fjordane county. Nestled between tall perpendicular mountains, it continues to attract many people from all around the world.

The lake’s water flows down from the Jostedalsbreen and the Tindefjellbreen glaciers, and its beautiful greenish hue derives from the clay particles and rock dust present in the water. Indeed, this splendid lake’s waters are greener than the grass along the waters! Along with sky-high mountains and the gorgeous valley, the Lovatnet is truly a charming place to set your eyes on.

Yet, who would have thought that such a beautiful place would hold a dark, tragic past? Multiple landslides and flood waves have occurred at the Lovatnet due to its geography, claiming many lives. You can still see the scars these tragedies left behind as you travel within the area. To this day, the tragedy of 1936, where a landslide triggered a floodwave at the Lovatnet, remains as the worst natural calamity in modern Norway. Yet, one has to be here to witness how terrifically charming this place is.
