Losiny Ostrov National Park

Russia’s first ever national park.

Established in 1983, the Losiny Ostrov National Park is the first of its kind in Russia. Located in the north-eastern edge of Moscow, it covers a total area of 116 square kilometres. This area has been protected for a long time, first as a royal hunting ground in the 18th century, then as a park under the forestry department.

Today, the national park is one of the remaining few places in Moscow where visitors can actually see wild animals in their natural habitat. At least 44 species of mammals dwell here, alongside with 170 bird species, 9 amphibian species, 5 reptile species and 19 fish species. Animal lovers would surely have a fun-filled day trying to take pictures of the various animals that reside here. The park also provides a sanctuary for those people who want to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. In fact, its vastness and serene atmosphere are sure to help visitors get back in touch with Mother Nature.

Tips Before You Go
Dress warmly, because the weather out here can be quite chilly. There are very few signs within the park, so be sure to bring a map along with you or use your phone’s GPS. You might find yourself completely lost if you stray off the main path, and in a park as huge as this, who knows when you’ll find your way back to civilisation!
