Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum

A living memory of American sporting history.

If the Coliseum in Rome was the ancient arena for sport and battles, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum serves much the same purpose, if only in a modern day context. It’s an outdoor stadium in downtown Los Angeles, and an iconic structure with a lofty architectural style of swooping pillars and high arches. Ever since it opened its doors in 1923, the Coliseum has hosted a long line of star-studded events and celebrities. It was responsible for the slow migration of professional sports teams to America’s west coast, providing a home for well-known names such as the Dodgers and the Lakers. To read through the list of games and teams it has hosted would be to take in America’s sporting history at a glance. The stadium has a seating capacity of almost 100,000 for sporting games, adding to its awe-inspiring atmosphere. If you come here on game day, the adrenaline and tension in the air is unreal. And it’s not just a nation-wide marvel: it is in fact the only facility in the world to have hosted the Summer Olympics twice, held two Super Bowls, one World Series and even a Papal Mass. A trip here will allow you appreciate firsthand the significance of this National Historic Landmark.
