Los Angeles County Museum of Art

Watch art unfold before your very eyes.

Even though just about every city has an art museum, this one is sure to blow your mind away. It holds the largest collection of art in the entire western sphere of the United States, and will definitely destroy all your subconscious assumptions of what art is. The museum’s displays are not just limited to fine art or paintings hanging on the walls, although that is indeed a proud part of their collection. They also have a varied range of sculptures, film, photography and multimedia works, and even clothing. As you wander the museum’s brightly-lit interior, you can’t help but admire the sheer diversity and colour on the walls. The museum doesn’t just feature local artists: it draws inspiration from all over the world, displaying art from every ethnicity imaginable, from Asian bronze sculptures to Latin American works and even Islamic artwork. There are no holds barred when it comes to exhibiting, with the museum displaying a controversial piece of work called Back Seat Dodge ’38. This features a couple in coitus in the backseat of a truncated chassis, which provoked hot debate in the city and continues to draw crowds today. No matter whether you’re a casual tourist or a die-hard art lover, there’s bound to be something for you to see at this museum.

Tips Before You Go
Of course you shouldn’t miss the iconic ‘Urban Lights’ statue just outside the museum, which features neat rows of lampposts that are brightly lit at night. They have many seasonal exhibitions running at any given time, so do research what you’d like to see before going. Parking is quite expensive, so taking public transport there is advisable.
