The Llotja de la Seda, more well-known in English as the “Silk Exchange”, is an impressive building. This Valencian Gothic building has been bestowed with many titles, including being one of the most important and best-preserved examples of Late Gothic architecture in all of Europe! Naturally, it has been a UNESCO Heritage since 1996. A breathtaking relic of Valencia’s Golden Age, the structure (also written as “La Lonja” in short) was built over the course of five decades, from the late 15th century to early 16th century. Make your way to the heart of Valencia to view the imposing façade and gaze up at the turrets, resembling more of a walled castle fortress rather than any other building. Gargoyles scream soundlessly along the wall of the exterior and high arched doors welcome you.

The intricate carvings are bound to captivate you and the twisting columns of The Contract Hall, the main hall, certainly set the atmosphere. It isn’t hard to imagine that this is where silk trading took place centuries ago. Head into the Pavilion of the Consulate, the seat of the Tribunal del Mar, which was the first ever marine merchant tribunal in Spain. Watch your step when you glance up at the ceiling because you might lose track of everything when the beautiful decorations captivate you. Head into the central tower, La Lonja, and wonder what it was like for the merchants who were imprisoned because of debt. Llotja de la Seda awaits!
