Livraria Lello

Rated among the best bookstores in the world.

Like a bookstore straight out of the Harry Potter franchise, the Livraria Lello is well-known for its stunning neo-gothic design. Located just five minutes away from Porto’s city centre, this magnificent bookstore is one of the oldest surviving bookstores in Portugal. Opened in 1906, its storied history can be traced way back to 1881. Visitors will definitely be gaping at its amazing architecture, all the way from its ceiling to floor. Right smack in the centre of the store is its iconic staircase, which invites visitors to its upper level. Enjoy a cup of coffee while you are upstairs at the coffee shop, or simply stare in awe at the stained glass above. Although the books here are mostly Portuguese literary works, there are English and French books available as well. Ironically, despite being a bookstore and containing tons of words, words cannot express how beautiful and mesmerising this place is. You have to see it to believe it.
