Liuhe Pagoda (六和塔)

A multi-tiered octagonal Chinese pagoda overlooking Qiantang River.

Built to calm the turbulent Qiantang River, Liuhe Pagoda is a delicate piece of architectural artistry that served as a lighthouse in the past. Translated to “Pagoda of Six Harmonies” in English, this ancient relic is entwined with the legend of a boy named Liuhe who threw rocks at Qiantang River where the Dragon King lived, after his parents were swept away by its tidal waves. Marvel at the architectural genius of this seven-storied pagoda, which actually looks as it if has thirteen storeys from the exterior. Even as you climb up the (fortunately only) seven storeys, the secret behind such a masterful illusion cannot be discovered. Instead you should stop wondering about that and just focus on the vibrant grottoes that feature gorgeous carvings of phoenixes, lotuses, peacocks, lions, qilin and other motifs within the pagoda. Once you reach the top, you will be subjected to a spectacular bird’s eye view of the surrounding hills and river. This is where you can witness the full might of the magnificent tidal waves on Quiantang River. With such majestic views inside and outside, Liuhe Pagoda is an attraction that will bring you inner peace.

Tips Before You Go
The tidal waves are in full force during the Mid-Autumn Festival, which occurs between September and October. This is also when the pagoda attracts the most visitors, as they all come to take photos of the intense waves and the decorations put up for the festival.
