Little Putuo Island (小普陀岛)

Set foot on what might be the smallest island you have ever set your eyes on.

As you explore the vast mirror-like Erhai Lake, you will notice a distinct structure emerging in the distance. When you get closer, you will realise that it’s a small island, with a telltale temple sitting on it. Photographers, have your cameras ready to snap pictures of this lovely sight. This is the Little Putuo Island, which, by composition, is entirely made out of limestone. Its round, seal-like shape has earned it the name “hai-yin” by the Chinese, which translates to “seal of the sea”.

Legend tells of a dragon that stayed by the Erhai lake, causing devastating storms. Guanyin, the female Chinese Bodhisattva of compassion, made use of the “seal” to subdue the dragon. Fishermen who lived nearby constructed the 15th century Little Putuo Temple in the Goddess’ honor. Make your way up the temple to enjoy a stunning bird’s eye view of the lake, and if you stick around until dusk, or arrive at dawn, the sight of fishermen in their quaint boats is truly a beautiful sight. You just might catch of the cormorants swooping about, as cormorant fishing is popular in this area. Don’t miss your chance to visit this lovely island!
