Lingyin Temple (灵隐寺)

Nestled between mountains, a tranquil Buddhist temple that infuses nature and religion in a scenic medley.

Translated to "Temple of Soul’s Retreat" in English, Lingyin Temple holds enormous cultural and religious significance as one of the oldest Buddhist temple in China. Even before you enter, the wooded hike to the temple already conceals many interesting nuggets: the Feilai Feng, the “Flying Peak” which flew from India, houses many intricate carvings of pilgrims from the epic Journey to the West and Buddhist gods. There are even more found in the numerous caves and grottoes dotting the area, making for a fascinating appetiser. Once you spot the serene Goddess of Mercy statue with her palms facing outwards, you are on the right path. Inside the temple, you can choose to partake in the Buddhist rituals, from lighting incense sticks and praying to a Buddhist god to tossing coins. The extensive temple grounds are impressive, with statues, halls, pavilions and pagodas and a vegetarian restaurant to visit. From the great saddle-shaped temple halls down to the chanting monks, you will be immersed in the temple’s marvellous energy. The treasure trove of architectural and artistic cultural relics and Buddhist literature is why Lingyin Temple is a fascinating yet informative knowledge centre.
