Lincoln Memorial

A large monument dedicated to the 16th President of the United States.

Across the Washington Monument lies a neoclassical monument dedicated to the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln (1809 – 1865). Located at the west end of the National Mall, it is modelled after an ancient Greek temple, with it being divided into three chambers demarcated by Ionic columns. In the second chamber is the main attraction of the monument: a large, seated sculpture of Abraham Lincoln himself, measuring about six metres tall. It also contains the inscriptions of two well-known speeches by the President: The Second Inaugural Address and his Gettysburg Address. Constructed in 1914 and opened to the public in 1922, approximately six million visitors come to this memorial annually. This memorial has also been the site for many world-famous speeches, including Martin Luther King Jr.’s (1929 – 1968) I Have a Dream speech.

Tips Before You Go
You can expect to see many people here, both locals and tourists alike all hoping to catch a glimpse of the iconic statue. Due to the large crowds, it might be rather difficult to take a good photo of Abraham Lincoln himself. Try using a good digital camera and visiting either early in the day or late at night if it’s possible.
