Lighthouse of Alexandria

One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World!

The Lighthouse of Alexandria, also known as the Pharos of Alexandria, was a lighthouse that was built during the Ptolemaic Kingdom between 280 and 247 BC, estimated to be about 100m in overall height. It was designated as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and was known to be one of the tallest man-made monuments worldwide for quite some time. However, with several conflicts and many earthquakes, it became badly damaged and an abandoned ruin. It was known as the third-longest surviving ancient wonder after the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus and the still surviving Great Pyramid of Giza. Today, its remnant stones were used to build the Citadel of Qaitbay, which now stands tall on the site. In 1994, several other remains of the lighthouse were discovered on Alexandria’s Eastern Harbour and the authorities have planned to convert those into an underwater museum. While it might not be as grand as it once was, visitors will be enamoured by the rich history that surrounds this site. What’s more, it is close to the sea as well, so the sea breeze will definitely keep you cool as you explore the ruins and admire the remains of ancient Egyptian civilisation.
