Ligaria Beach

Nestled in the midst of a small mountain range lies the enclosed bay of Ligaria, its sandy shores greatly sought after for the sights and scents they offer.

If you’re looking for calm waters and an easily accessible beach, the Ligaria Beach often tops the list in Crete. Sheltered from the winds by the slopes leading away from the bay, the waters of Ligaria are often slate still throughout the day. With diving and snorkeling facilities, the Ligaria’s unmoving waters are easily tackled even for the most amateur of tourists. The eastern end is slightly more turbulent with the occasional head wind whereas moving westward, one can see the sand and rocks growing smoother as the sea all but falls silent.

If you continue walking westward, veering slightly to the North, you will reach the cape of Ligaria. The gentle peak overlooks the bay, leaving visitors with the sight of verdant green ringing the sparkling waters of Ligaria. Given the lack of wind, the bay is a common stop site for tiny boats that can be seen bobbing gently in bright reds, yellows and greens that adorn the blue slate. If you aren’t against the bustling crowds that are bound to fill the popular attraction, Ligaria is a pretty and convenient getaway.

Tips Before You Go
Towards the western end of the beach, a path leads up and away from the main shoreline, opening out onto the Cape of Ligaria. The cape does more than protecting the waters of Ligaria. It also hides away the entrance to Parasfougaria, an unknown shore cut away from civilization. Unfortunately, the path leading to it lies in private property so you’ll only be able to enjoy the view from afar.
