L’Hôtel de Ville

The city hall of Marseille.

The Hôtel de Ville is the city hall of Marseille and the meeting place for the city council since the middle ages. Built in the 17th century, the three-story neo-Baroque styled building is one of the key attractions in central Marseille and one of the most resilient buildings for it was the only building that survived the devastations of World War II. Marseille’s equally famous St Marie Majeure Cathedral, is located by the Joilette Docks and the Panier hillside is definitely one of the most iconic and elegant cathedrals in France. Located at the Old Port (Vieux Port) within the Hôtel de Ville is also the Musée des Docks Romains, that features exhibits from Roman shipwrecks and is situated within the ruins of an ancient Roman warehouse.
