A complex of buildings erected to house wounded and homeless war veterans, the Les Invalides, also known as Hôtel national des Invalides, stands as one of the most prestigious monuments in Paris. Although the complex still retains its original purpose, there are now several museums located within this complex as it extensively documents French military history. With a whole host of museums to peruse through and choose from the including the Musée de l'Armée was notably one of the largest war museums to date, and its permanent collection has historical relics and thematic collections that are presented chronologically.

The Musée des Plans-Reliefs showcases three-dimensional models of many fortified cities dating from 1668 to 1870, whereas the Musée d'Histoire Contemporaine focuses more on socio-political issues spanning from 1870 to the modern day. Other attractions include the iconic Dôme des Invalides, which was formerly a church, but currently, houses tombs of French war heroes, such as the renowned Napoleon Bonaparte. The dome itself is also an architectural wonder, inspired by the St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
