Lenbachhaus (Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus)

A panoply of colour at the Lenbachhaus art museum.

Built in 1891 as a studio and villa for the artist Franz von Lenbach (1836 – 1904), Lenbachhaus stands today as an art museum, containing artworks by Munich painters and contemporary artists. Located in the Kunstareal district in Munich, the museum displays works by Munich painters Carl Spitzweg (1808 – 1885) and Eduard Schleich (1812 – 1874), amongst many others. Restoration and expansion efforts over the past century account for the building’s well-preserved state and its impressive new wing, which was specially designed to provide optimum lighting for its its main attraction - the Blue Rider collection. The world-renowned Blue Rider collection showcases the works of early 20th century Expressionist artists, easily recognised by its characteristic style of separating form and colour into discrete elements within a painting, and of applying non-naturalistic colour to recognisable objects. The museum also focuses on contemporary art, featuring works by Joseph Beuys (1921 – 1986) and Asger Jorn (1914 – 1973), just to name a few. Lenbachhaus, a museum rich in history and complete with unique art collections, is bound to keep all art enthusiasts riveted.

Tips Before You Go
Audio guides are distributed for free upon entry, and the exhibitions all have written descriptions in both English and German so don’t worry if you’re afraid that you won’t understand anything. Besides that, be sure to set aside a couple of hours to explore the museum, because there’s just so much to do! Touring the art museum will set you back a few hours, and that’s not counting the time you’ll spend in the gift shop and cafe too. Do note that the museum is closed on Mondays though.
