Lascar Row (Cat Street)

Like trawling through an eccentric aunt’s attic, only with more choices. This historic flea market in Hong Kong has been charming tourists for over 100 years.

Popularly known as Cat Street, Lascar Row was once a haven for thieves looking to sell off their ill-gotten gains (also known as “rat” goods). These days, you’ll more likely find mass-produced items designed with an “antique” sheen, but the quaintness of it all is irresistible nonetheless. Open from Monday to Saturday, this photogenic little lane in Sheung Wan offers is filled with Mao figurines, snuff bottles, antique fans, old watches, mirrors, coins, postcards, old newspaper papers and calendars. If you’re lucky, you might even find some authentic Qing Dynasty porcelain at a bargain price. Photography buffs will have a great time too, but ask before taking pictures to avoid nasty spats.
