Lantau Island

Newer developments like Disneyland Hong Kong face off quiet hiking trails and rural villages on the largest of the Hong Kong Islands.

The island’s iconic, massive, sitting Buddha sculpture has watched serenely as developments such as Disneyland, a cable car system and the rather touristy Ngong Ping 360 culture village sprang up across the island. But most of Lantau Island is in fact, protected parkland, and intrepid travellers who make the effort will discover quaint fishing villages, scenic hiking trails and quiet beaches. A 70km trail traverses the island’s rolling hills, and sections vary in difficulty to suit different abilities. Meanwhile, the fishing port of Tai O is a throwback to life in pre-colonial Hong Kong - a boat tour is a good way to take in the unique stilt house settlements on the waterfront, and you may even spot a pink dolphin to boot. Too much for a day trip? We agree, so why not spend the night? From hotels to hostels to apartment rentals, Lantau Island has options for every traveller.
