Laniakea Beach

A favourite turtle hangout spot.

In Hawaii’s native language, ‘Laniakea’ means ‘wide sky.’ Indeed, the beach boasts a clear view of the open vista of sky and sea spread out before you in the most pleasing way possible. However, this beach has gained its fame as the gathering place of the honu or green sea turtles, whose presence have given the beach its other name of ‘Turtle Beach.’ If you don’t know the life story of the turtle, it’s an inspiring one. Once a year, the adult turtle makes an arduous journey by sheer instinct right back to the beach where they were born, in order to lay eggs and produce offspring in the same manner as their own birth. Although you will probably not be able to catch this incredible process, it is still highly likely that your visit to this beach will be graced with the presence of at least one member of this rare species. The turtles enjoy coming to Laniakea Beach to sun themselves and feed on algae and seagrasses easily found in the warm shallows. From afar off, their enormous shells might be mistaken for rock formations. Do make a trip down, and catch a glimpse of these elusive creatures for yourself.
