Lancang River

Part of the Danube of the East.

The Lancang River is what makes up the upper reaches of the Mekong River in China, and is the longest river in Southeast Asia! This river system is made up of trunk streams and over a 100 tributaries: the drainage area is more than twice the size of Germany. It also an incredible natural fall, which is between 2000 to 3000 meters, and the riverways flow through the mountains with streets, forming steep gorges that make for delightful aerial views.


Of course, dangerous shoals and rapids are a part of this massive river, and it is home to an incredible number of species of animals and plants. In fact, the World Wildlife Fund named the Lancang-Mekong River Basin the most important freshwater fish ecological region in 2000. Here, the huge Mekong giant catfish and Irrawaddy dolphins live, and are critically endangered.
