Agios Nikolaos, Greece
Lake Voulismeni

What was once believed to be the private bath of the Goddess Athena can now be seen bathed in warm sunlight by day and the neon lights of the Agios Nikolaos tavernas and bars by night.

Of the many myths shrouding Lake Voulismeni, one of the more prominent tales is that of its bottomless depths. The lakes deep blue waters in fact reach 210 feet, fed warmth throughout the year by the waters of a hot spring found at the lake bed. A single man-made channel acts as its life line, connected to the town’s harbor and the open oceans beyond. Despite that, motor boats can be seen moored along the lake’s banks, bobbing to the rhythm of the wind across the lake’s surface as they await passengers.

Tucked into the alleyways and branching streets, lining the perimeter of the lake, are restaurants handed down countless generations. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing meal of typical Cretan fashion as they overlook the still, blue waters. Let the sweet, nutty flavors of Cretan cheese burst across your tongue or let the scents and sharp tastes of herbs flood your senses with Dakos and Kleftiko. As twilight descends upon the town, watch the lake’s nymphs emerge in the form of dancing neon lights across the waters. Enchanting both by day and night, Lake Voulismeni’s beauty is truly bottomless.

Tips Before You Go
Climbing the stairs curving around the sloped lake surface gives visitors the chance to shoot an amazing panorama of the port beyond the lake. A note of caution though. With stiff competition and a plethora of stalls and restaurants, restaurant owners and waiters are bound to haggle at the passing tourist. Though part of the experience, this is bound to cow many a tourist so be prepared to walk away should you face this.
