Aswan Governorate, Egypt
Lake Nasser

One of the largest manmade water bodies in the world!

Lake Nasser is an extensive reservoir situated in between Southern Egypt and Northern Sudan. It stretches 550km in length, with a width of 35km and a total surface area of a whopping 5250 square kilometres. That makes it one of the largest manmade lakes worldwide! Before its construction, Sudan opposed it as it would encroach on land in the North where the Nubians lived, forcing them to have to migrate. By definition, the name Lake Nasser refers only to the larger portion of it within Egypt with the Sudanese referring to the part of the lake in Sudan as “Lake Nubia”. It was built as a result of the Aswan High Dam’s establishment and was named after Gamal Abdel Nasser, a leader in the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, and then the second President of Egypt who initiated the project. Fishing is popular amongst tourists and you can even board a cruise to tour the entire lake and the surrounding landmarks! If you wish to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, then spending a few hours by the lake and enjoying some peace and quiet is a great way to unwind.

Tips Before You Go
To properly enjoy the expanse of the lake, consider taking a cruise trip around. It’s just too large to try and traverse the length on foot, so why not spend a few relaxing hours on a ship while enjoying the scenery. You might also want to consider stopping by Abu Simbel and explore the ruins there, since it is nearby the lake.
