Lake Michigan

You just might be fooled into thinking you’re gazing at the sea!

Chicago’s Lake Michigan, measuring about 307 miles from north to south, at maximum depth, is almost as deep as the 360 Chicago is tall! The vast size of the lake is comparable to the entirety of West Virginia, and the illusion that you’re looking at the sea couldn’t be more convincing. The name originates from “mishigami”, the Ojibwa Indian word that means “large lake”. With the massive amount of water it holds, it is the second largest of the Great Lakes and the fifth biggest in the world.

It’s understandable if you’re at a loss - with an area this massive, where could you possibly start? Summer is a great time for you to grab a friend and paddleboard the waters. While you’re guaranteed to flail and fall in at some point, you can go on your own tour of the famous Chicago beaches here. If you’re seeking some thrill, rent a jet ski to cruise the blue waters or speed along on a bicycle along the lakeside front. The skyline is dotted with towering buildings and gardens abundant with prairies grasses and flowers. If you’re a “landlubber”, grab your fishing reels and head out to catch some salmon, trout or even bass! The lake is known for its abundance of life, including sea lamprey and waterfowls like swans and ducks, not to mention the hovering bald eagles and vultures! End you day with a delightful view of the sky lighting up in a burst of color when the fireworks display starts.
