Lake Hillier

A tiny pink lake in Western Australia that defies all geographical logic.

Starkly contrasting the Pacific Ocean that lies just next to it, Lake Hillier is famous for its pinkish-hued waters. First discovered in 1802, this small lake is located on Middle Island, off the coast of Western Australia. Although there are other pink lakes around the world, the water from this particular one remains distinctively pink even when taken out of the lake, which is unlike any other. The reason for the pink color is still unknown to scientists; however, some have speculated that it could be the Dunaliella salina microalgae that are causing this phenomenon. A unique observation shows the lake giving off a solid pink color when viewed from a distance above; on the other hand when seen at close proximity, the color appears less accentuated, although still distinct. Swimming in this lake is perfectly safe, but the location pretty much makes it impossible to do so. Helicopter cruises are one of the more popular ways to admire this unique lake - so book yours now!
