Lake Garda

The country’s largest lake is set to impress.

If you visit only one lake during your time in Italy, let it be Lake Garda. The largest lake in the whole of Italy, its crystalline waters and picturesque shores have enchanted writers and explorers alike for centuries. Indeed, it is the epitome of a summer’s day--perhaps lovelier and more temperate thanks to its mild Mediterranean climate. From the north, it is enveloped by lofty sloping mountains that give the lake a fjord-like configuration and an imposing grandeur. It broadens in diameter towards the south, which is surrounded by morainic hills that were created by the glacier recession thousands of years ago.

Since then, low-lying human settlements have gradually emerged around the lake, covering its coastline with a charming spread of Italian villas and medieval-looking towers. In the lower basin, the waters are ringed by thickets of vineyards that produce Bardolino, the famous local specialty. The air hangs heavy with the scent of lemon flowers. You can take your time to enjoy this attraction, crossing the waters leisurely on punctual ferries that will bring you to sample the special experiences each little town has to offer. A trip there will make the praises of Garda’s famous admirers come to life.
