Kyoto Railway Museum (京都鉄道博物館)

Kyoto’s new museum for train enthusiasts.

Built in 2016, the Kyoto Railway Museum is definitely a must-go for railway enthusiasts. This three-storey museum is home to 53 retired trains, ranging from steam locomotives to the lightning quick shinkansen trains. Visitors can learn more about Japan’s rail history and also experience walking underneath the trains, allowing you to see the inner workings of a freight locomotive. The museum is also home to one of Japan’s largest dioramas, where visitors can enjoy controlling the train models. In addition, there is an operating simulator, which allows visitors to actually experience the job of a train conductor!

If you’re looking for photo opportunities, the Sky Terrace on the third floor provides a view of the nearby JR and shinkansen lines. And just outside the main building lies a roundhouse with a turntable built way back in 1914, showcasing Japan’s largest collection of well-preserved steam locomotives. Visitors can even embark on a one-kilometre journey on the train! So all aboard the Kyoto Railway Museum, and let it transport you into a splendid world of trains.
