Standing right next to the giant torii gate of the Heian Shrine is the Kyoto Museum of Modern Art, an art museum dedicated to 20th century artwork from Japan, as well as other parts of the world. Opened in 1986 with a total floor area of 9,761 square metres, this museum has a permanent exhibition that rotates its collection every few months. Collections include paintings by local artists like Kagaku Murakami (1888 – 1939) and Sotaro Yasui (1888 – 1955), as well as overseas artists like Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973) and Edgar Degas (1834 – 1917). Other collections include sculptures, ceramics, crafts and photography. Besides the collections, the museum in itself is a piece of modern art, being designed by Pritzker Prize (the defining award in world of architecture) winner Fumihiko Maki! This is truly a veritable gold mine of modern art.

Tips Before You Go
If you wish to view special exhibitions, you will need to pay an additional amount, on top of the entrance fee. Besides that, take note that the exterior of the building is totally nondescript, so don’t be surprised if you walk past it without noticing the first time.
