Kyoto Imperial Palace (京都御所)

Former residence of the Japanese Imperial Family.

Up until 1868, this site served as the residence, as well as the ruling palace for the Emperor of Japan. Located within Kyoto Imperial Park, the palace today is mainly used for enthronement ceremonies. Previously, the palace grounds were only accessible via guided tours, but now, visitors are allowed to enter and explore on their own. Nevertheless, English-speaking guides are still available if needed.

Take a walk through the grounds of the palace and soak in the sights of majestic buildings and beautiful gardens. Though unfortunately none of the buildings can be entered, the grand atmosphere outside still makes this place worth a visit. Besides the palace, the park is also home to other historical sites, like the Sento Imperial Palace and the Kaninnomiya Mansion. Being steeped in Japanese history, this is definitely a place that will bring delight to all history buffs out there.
