Saint Petersburg, Russia
Kunstkamera

See all things weird and wonderful under one roof at the Kunstkamera.

A museum unlike any other, the Kunstkamera offers cutting edge exhibits, which will leave you spellbound. Established by Peter the Great on the Neva Riverfront in 1727, it is the first museum in Russia. This comprehensive ethnographical museum has a mind-boggling collection of around 2,000,000 items, all collected by the people of Russia. Much credit goes to the donations and efforts of volunteers, the Russian fleet in the navigations abroad and the academic expeditions undergone.

One of the more peculiar collections includes deformed human and animal foetuses, acquired by the tsar to deepen society’s knowledge of the natural world. See the Siamese twins in a jar and the skeletons of a giant. If such exhibits are not your cup of tea, fret not, as you can also see the glittering collection of minerals and gems by Peter the Great and a million more fascinating items at the Kunstkamera.

Tips Before You Go
As some parts of the museum are rather graphic, it is advised that you do not bring young children to visit those specimens, as it could end up giving them nightmares. Do take note that some of the exhibitions are rather dusty, which contribute to the old-world charm of the museum.
